S05E099, Are You Humble Or Proud? Andy B 2 Minute Video,
”Pride goes before a fall”. You ever heard that phrase? It’s actually taken straight out of the bible, from Proverbs 15 verse 18 and it’s another nugget of eternally rich wisdom that reminds us not to think too much of ourselves.
Pride is one of things that blinds us to the obvious truth - much like the fable of the emperor’s clothes. So proud was that king of wearing the finest clothes in his kingdom, only to miss the obvious – he’d been tricked into wearing nothing at all, by his pride.
I knew two men who both nearly lost their loves either climbing a ladder, or fixing a shower. What was it that drove them to try? Well, perhaps saving money might have been a factor, But, ultimately, pride goes before a fall and it goes before falling from a great height and electrocuting ourselves too when you don’t take appropriate precautions like setting the ladder on a flat surface at the correct angle, or turning the power off first.
What is the opposite? Humility.
And you can’t ‘do’ humble, you can only ‘be’ humble.
I’m pretty sure that that ladder climbing or shower fixing friends of mine were humbled as equally as the intelligent physicist I knew who put the hot ashes from their BBQ straight into the bin. Which caught fire. Which they threw water on, causing an explosion from the glass bottles they’d also just put in the bin.
Just because we can doesn’t mean we should. And intelligence doesn’t equate to living longer!!
So have a care, and pursue humility, so it doesn’t end up becoming the final master of your life.

[00:00:00] So another Andy B Two Minute Video, and I'm thinking today Are You Humble Or Are You proud? Now the obvious answer for all of us is, well, I think I'm pretty humble. And we might joke and say, well, I'm so, I'm so awesome in my humility. And we can make these jokes, but actually we shouldn't be joking about pride! We should be very much an aiming at humility. And it's really important.
[00:00:32] Because what does the Bible say? Philippians 2 verse 3. The reason why humility is important.
[00:00:37] Don't be selfish. Don't try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.
[00:00:44] And that's really, really hard when we look at the state of the world and we think, well, it's not as, we're not as bad as them. And, cor, look at what they're doing over there. And we can get all proud about it and think, oh, look at how better we are and we've missed the point.
[00:00:57] You ever heard the phrase, you can be right and still [00:01:00] wrong? Ever had an argument with somebodyand you're shouting at them about your perspective. You are already wrong, even if your point is right. Because as Christians we're supposed to act in a different way. We're not supposed to argue and shout and be unpleasant towards others because they're not getting our perspective or our opinion.
[00:01:18] Don't be selfish. Philippians 2 verse 3. NLT. , New Living Translation.
[00:01:23] Don't be selfish. Don't try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.
[00:01:29] Let's read on another verse.
[00:01:31] Don't look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others too.
[00:01:37] You ever been with those people where they just talk at you and they don't really care about your life? They just want to to be listened to. I've met plenty of those. And actually it's important that when we're having a conversation, it's a two-way conversation.
[00:01:51] Yeah. It's great to sometimes have a friend and you can just offload your day. That's, there's nothing wrong with that. but there needs to be a [00:02:00] two-way street here. We actually need to be talking with somebody.
[00:02:04] ,Don't be selfish. Don't try to impress others. Be humble thinking of others as better than yourselves.
[00:02:10] In your job, are you thinking you want the next promotion, so you're gonna make yourself look better and push others down? You are in the wrong.
[00:02:18] You wanna make sure your kids have got the best dressed clothes so that other parents know that your kids are, you've already missed the point.
[00:02:24] Humility is not something that you do. It's, it's who you are. You can't do humble. You can only really be humble.
[00:02:33] Are You Humble Or Are You Proud? Ditch the pride. Aim for being less selfish. Become the the humble person that you want to be with, for others.
