S04E093, When White Washing Isn’t White Washing, Andy B 2 Minute Video

Washing machine companies spend an eye watering amount of money on advertising. I cringe as I remember some of the adverts on TV in the 80s and 90s. But, not, perhaps for the reasons you may think. Although, saying that, some of those adverts truly dreadful.

Not all that long ago the BerryBunch ran a high street shop - we sold everything eco-friendly, including alternatives for washing detergents, until a recession forced our profitable business to have to close.

Washing detergent functions just like a bar of soap – it attracts dirt, before washing the combined solution down the drain. No matter how much you spend, your detergent behaves in the same basic way. And the idea that if you use a particular detergent your clothes will smell better, or be brighter, or more coloured, just doesn’t really hold wash or hold much water (two puns in one!).

If you ever stop using washing detergent, you’ll know exactly what I mean as two things happen – your clothes suddenly lose a greyness you didn’t even know had been building up over time, and your machine stinks worse than a backed-up drain from your toilet on a hot summer day!

That smell is simply old detergent in your machine that is no longer being masked by fresh perfume from new detergent. It does not smell good! The greyness leaving is because the detergent – which was trapped in the clothing – is now being finally washed away, revealing the true colour of the fabric.

An old cliché you may have heard is ‘have you been washed in the blood’? This has origins with an initiation ceremony Roman soldiers might go through. An animal was suspended over them, while it was slaughtered. The blood would, literally, wash over them.

When Jesus died on that old rugged cross, He became that literal sacrifice as He took the place we could never take ourselves. His blood washed us clean as He defeated death, and makes us clean enough for heaven, should we choose to follow Him.

Life agitates us, just like a washing machine. But don’t try and avoid all of that agitation because it can also serve to refine us too, and wash us clean – if you choose to let it. All we need to do is call upon Jesus, and He will walk with us through whatever trial we’re facing, and make us whither than fresh fallen snow.

So another Andy B 2 Minute Video.

Now, I was having an interaction with some comments with another WordPress blogger, or two actually, Alan and Mandy from Devotional Treasures and Blue Collar Theologian. Two really good blogs! Anyway, we got chatting about one of the posts, and we were commenting away. And it really hit me about the power of washing detergent and, and what we think of this miracle product, and how it can function.

0:35
Really, really simply, it works like a bar of soap! It's no more complicated, actually. Lots of bells and whistles, but soap works by attracting the dirt, which is oppositely charged. Opposites attract. And then it gets washed away by the water. Washing detergent, whatever the brand, wherever the promise works exactly the same way. The only real difference is, is how much it smells, how much it costs, how bright it'll make your washing, how colourful it will make it like it was brand new. There's all these promises.

1:06
Now, as somebody who used to sell eco friendly products, I can tell you that actually what a lot of washing detergents really do, is they mask the colour of your clothing. They actually make it quite grey. And that whiteness that they do, it comes at a cost for your skin, for the environment, and for your washing machine.

1:24
Now, I'm not saying that washing machines are going to be destroyed by washing detergent. But here's the thing, if you stop using washing detergent in your washing machine, you will find one of two things happens.

1:34
Firstly, your clothes will absolutely wreak and stink, when they come out for quite a while.

1:41
The second thing that will happen is you'll find your clothes start to look more colourful, and more white. Because what washing detergent does is it masks the smell, and it masks the dirt. Yeah, it cleans a lot of stuff. But, actually, what it's also doing, is masking things. And that's what really struck me.

1:58
How often in our lives are we masking stuff we we work like modern washing machine detergents, whether you remember those adverts from the 80s and 90s. And they promised all this amazing stuff. But, actually, when you stop using it, you see what it's really doing. And it's just lots, and lots, and lots of perfume to make things smell fresh, but not actually clean it like you think it is. And actually there are much better products out there, that we use personally and this isn't about to come an advert for those! But there are much better products that actually work like the soap does, and they don't mask the smell, and it will leave your clothes brighter and more colourful. So not all washing detergents are created equally.

2:34
But let's be careful in our lives that we're not masking and pretending by putting so much perfume, and so much brightness on, that people are getting the fake idea of what's really going on.

2:46
Let's be real, let's be true, let's be authentic.
